How did you prepare for your interview with Nine?
I treated it as an opportunity for self-reflection, thinking about my achievements, challenges, and lessons learned. I wanted to share more than just my experience; I aimed to bring my passion, authenticity, and sense of purpose into the conversation. I researched Nine’s purpose and values to see how they aligned with my own, ensuring I could contribute meaningfully.
I took time to learn about the people I would be meeting with. Nine’s team is made up of remarkable individuals with fascinating careers, and understanding their backgrounds made me feel more confident and connected.
I also studied the job description and prepared examples that showcased my skills, collaboration style, and problem-solving approach. To make my responses engaging, I used a Miro board to visually present my thought process. Finally, I practiced with mock interviews, receiving constructive feedback to refine my approach.
What advice do you have for candidates? Approach the interview as a two-way conversation. Be authentic, bring your true self to the table, and show how you connect with the company’s values and culture. Share stories that highlight your growth, your teamwork, and your ability to face challenges. Show how you approach problem-solving, not just the outcomes you’ve achieved.

As a member of Toastmasters International, I would thoroughly recommend visiting a Toastmasters club. It’s a great way to build confidence in public speaking and practice delivering well-structured, spontaneous responses to a variety of questions. Use apps like Zoom to record yourself answering interview questions from a friend. Then, review your responses, noting areas for improvement in your answers, gestures, and facial expressions.
Your unique life story is an important ingredient of any interview. I have diverse experience across many roles, industries and even countries and I try to use a bit of humour to show how my diverse skills have contributed to my success.

Allow plenty of time to get to the interview to keep stress levels down. I asked the interviewers what they enjoy most about working at Nine and I gathered some useful insights into the newsroom camaraderie and the challenges of the role.
Last impressions in an interview count as much as first impressions – thank your interviewers for their time and ask about next steps in the process.

What did you do to prepare for the interview with Nine?
I believe it’s possible to overprepare, so on the day of my interview, I stopped preparing and focused on staying relaxed. Naturally, I was nervous because I wanted the job, but I always remind myself that interviews are two-way conversations and I’m assessing the fit as much as the interviewers are assessing me.

Try to relax and be yourself. Authenticity is important because it allows you to show who you truly are. People often mirror body language, so maintaining a relaxed demeanor can help put the interviewer at ease, which will make the conversation flow more naturally.
