How Software Engineer Anubhab Karki is expanding his skills at Nine
Learning on the job, tackling diverse projects, and building products that reach millions – Anubhab’s journey has been packed with growth.

When Anubhab Karki joined Nine’s Web Team as a Software Engineer in April 2024, he knew he’d be working on big projects—but he didn’t anticipate just how much he’d learn along the way. He’s now a full-stack JavaScript developer with React Native experience tackling complex challenges, collaborating across teams, and building products that reach millions of Australians.
Tackling varied projects with big impact
Anubhab is part of the Nine Web team, working on nine.com.au and its subdomains, including Entertainment, Honey, News, and Wide World of Sports. His work spans a wide range of projects, from building web pages and APIs to integrating new technologies.
“The reach of our work is huge,” Anubhab shares. “In my previous role, before coming to Nine, I built a web app mostly for internal use. Here, my work is seen by a massive audience across desktop and mobile. That’s both exciting and a big responsibility.”
The variety of projects has been a standout for Anubhab. “I’ve gone from working on a single app to contributing to over 20 different repositories. Each project is unique, and while it was challenging at first to learn each repo, it’s also been an incredible learning opportunity.”
Continuous learning and growth
Anubhab’s role at Nine has allowed him to expand his skill set. Prior to joining Nine he was a frontend developer and he now works on APIs, and cloud services like AWS.
“Before Nine, I’d never really worked with AWS, but here I got to dive into it and learn. It’s not just about the day job – it’s sparked a personal interest in cloud technologies. I’ve even started exploring online courses to deepen my knowledge.”
The team’s supportive culture makes learning easier. “If you have any questions, you just reach out, and the team is always there. Even if my team doesn’t have the answer, there are so many ways to get the answer. You’re never stuck for long.’”
Nine also fosters development through regular learning sessions. “We have ‘Lunch and Learn’ sessions where tech companies like AWS, Google and Fastly come in to teach us about new tools and technologies. It’s a great way to stay up to date with the latest trends in the industry. And yes, there’s free lunch!”
Opportunities to explore and innovate
Nine’s dynamic environment provides plenty of room to experiment and innovate. “We’re currently migrating legacy applications such as Wide World of Sports into a new domain under nine.com.au. I’ve learned so much about modern React, SEO strategies, redirects and complexities of backend processes – it’s been a huge learning curve.”
With projects like these and the chance to contribute to high-profile events like the Olympics and Paralympics, Anubhab feels his career has taken a leap forward.
“Nine is a great place if you’re looking to learn new things and work on diverse projects,” he says. “You’re not just stuck on one app or site – you can learn new technologies, and really develop yourself.”
Hybrid work with connection the focus
Anubhab works in a hybrid model, splitting his time between the office and home. His team follows an “anchor day” approach, ensuring they come into the office on the same days, so in-person time is meaningful and productive.
“On office days, we try to organise a team hangout – go for lunch and just spend time together. We also catch up with the wider teams at organised social catch ups, such as pizza night or drinks. There’s lots of other fun stuff like the annual hackathon where you can meet others and network. There’s a great culture with things going on every week to participate in if you want.”
A culture of support and recognition
For Anubhab, the team culture has been a highlight. From day one, his manager helped him navigate the onboarding process, and the team’s collaborative spirit has been a constant source of support.
Recognition also plays a big role. Anubhab was thrilled to be nominated for a “Spark” award, a peer-nominated award recognising team members who embody Nine’s values, in this case the value “Walk the Talk.”
“Being nominated for the award was a really proud moment for me. After just six months at Nine, my Principal Engineer shared some amazing feedback acknowledging my contributions. That alone felt like a huge win.” shared Anubhab.
We asked Anubhab to share his thoughts on why Software Engineers similar to himself should consider working at Nine.
“If you’re looking to join Nine, whether to learn new things or work on diverse projects, I think it’s a great place to be. You’ll have the chance to contribute to something that reaches a vast audience.”
